Description
An honest Australian working axe from the 1960s, complete with its original hardwood handle and traces of factory green paint.
This vintage Hytest Forged Tools round poll axe is a particularly nice survivor from the mid-century Australian farm and woodlot era. The head remains in very good condition, retaining a clear and deep maker’s stamp along with remnants of the original green enamel finish that give it wonderful character and authenticity.
The poll shows only light wear, the bit retains plenty of good steel, and the axe remains tight on what appears to be its original Australian hardwood handle (some checking at the bottom of the handle). The handle has been carefully cleaned and treated with Forgotten Steel Workshop Oil before receiving a protective coat of Workshop Wax.
Rather than over-restoring it, I’ve chosen to preserve the features that make this axe special—its stamp, paint remnants and honest working history.
This is not a decorative reproduction. It is a genuine vintage Australian axe that is ready to return to work, whether that’s splitting firewood, camping, property maintenance or simply being appreciated by someone who values traditional tools.
Every axe restored at Forgotten Steel is completed by hand in my workshop here in Australia.
Restore it. Use it. Pass it on.
